Easter in Guanajuato, Mexico

This is our third Easter away from Bristol. In 2015, we spent it in the quiet town of Debrecen, Hungary. Last year we celebrated with some friends in China, where Easter isn’t celebrated. This year, we’re in the beautiful town of Guanajuato, Mexico. The town is super busy due to the holidays but it has an exciting atmosphere. Exploring Guanajuato Guanajuato is in a ravine. The town is down in the bottom of the ravine and many tunnels link the city. We’re staying on one of the many hills on the edge of the city. This means it’s lovely and …

My Love-Hate Relationship With Starbucks

A Starbucks in Guangzhou, China

Following on from my Love-Hate Relationship with Lonely Planet, the lovely Mitch (AKA The Ambling Bristolian) has written about another thing we have a love-hate relationship with while travelling… Starbucks. The first time I went to Starbucks, I was 17 years old (it was one of those dates that wasn’t actually a date but I really wished it was a date) and I was told to order a chocolate coffee milkshake sort of thing. You know the one I mean. Anyway, I loved it (because I was 17 and my taste buds were about as sensitive as Donald Trump’s sense …

“You’re Living Your Dream & This Shit Should Be Fun”

Ain’t nobody want to see you down in the dumps because you’re living your dream and this shit should be fun. The title of the blog post comes from a new Ed Sheeran song, Eraser. Granted, he’s talking about his life as a high-flying, global singer-songwriter. Alas, I am not. But the line is relatable and something I’ve been meaning to write about for a while: Living The Dream. We’ve met a lot of people on our travels who said they were so envious of our lifestyle. We’re “living the dream” they’ve said. Travelling and working combined is certainly a blessing, …

Touching Down in Mexico City

Landing in Mexico City We landed at 4 am in Mexico City, earlier than we were scheduled to do so. Our flight with Aeromexico had been very smooth and we even managed to sleep a fair amount on the plane. The queue for immigration was long but we finally made it through and got our luggage about 5.15am. Google Maps informed us of a quick and easy route to get to our hostel. We arrived at 7am, unsure if we could get into our room, but thankfully we could. We flopped onto the bed, exhausted from the 12-hour flight. It was …

Visiting the DMZ, Korea

The DMZ (demilitarised zone) in Korea marks the territory between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea). I’m not a big fan of organised tours. However, sometimes, they are a necessity. This was certainly the case when we wanted to visit the DMZ. You can’t just rock up and take a few photos. You have to go with a tour group and have your passport checked before entering.   The day itself was interesting and some parts have actually become quite “touristy”. Upon arriving, all visitors are made to watch an eight-minute …

How Travelling Has Increased My Environmental Awareness

Global warming and climate change are two things we keep hearing about frequently. Unlike some high authority figures, it’s not something we should be ignoring. However, it’s always been difficult to really grasp the effect global warming is having. It’s easy to get caught up in our day to day lives of finances, work, and personal relationships. My most recent travels have opened up to my eyes to the impact our livelihood is having and has increased my environmental awareness. Air Pollution in China Since being home, the question I often get asked is “How was China?” By now, I’ll admit that I …
